Ericeira is today one of the most important surfing destinations in the world. On October 14, 2011, its coast between the Empa area and São Lourenço beach was officially recognized by the Save the Waves Coalition as a World Surfing Reserve, the first in Europe. The protected area covers about 4 km of coastline and includes seven world-class waves: Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos, and São Lourenço.
Why is Ericeira such a special surf destination?
Several factors help explain Ericeira’s status:
- Waves for all levels: from softer beach breaks to heavy and technical reef breaks.
- Year-round consistency: the Atlantic frequently delivers swell, especially from autumn to spring.
- Protected surf reserve: seven high-level waves concentrated on a short stretch of coast, with active concern for coastal preservation.
- Proximity to Lisbon: about 40–45 minutes by car from the capital, just under 50 km away.
Result: within a radius of just a few kilometers, you can choose between long lines, heavy barrels, fuller waves for longboarding, or ideal spots for beginners taking their first steps.
Main Surf Spots in Ericeira
Below is an overview of the best-known spots, the recommended level, and the type of wave.
Ribeira d’Ilhas (Intermediate / Advanced)
It is Ericeira’s “queen” and one of Europe’s most iconic point breaks. A long, high-performance right-hander that can line up for hundreds of meters on classic days. It has hosted national and international competitions since the 80s.
Recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers; the crowd and currents can be challenging for beginners.Coxos (Advanced)
One of Portugal’s most famous waves. A powerful, fast, and often tubular right-hander with very critical sections. The bottom is reef and requires excellent timing, positioning, and experience. Normally only for advanced surfers.São Lourenço (Intermediate / Advanced)
It marks the northern limit of the World Surfing Reserve. A wide beach with several peaks, but best known for the strong and long right-hander on large swell days, highly valued by those looking for XXL dimension waves.Reef (Advanced)
A technical and shallow reef break, included in the Reserve area. When working, it offers fast and heavy sections. Recommended only for surfers comfortable on rock bottoms.Pedra Branca and Crazy Left (Intermediate / Advanced)
Two nearby reefs, both within the Reserve, known for fast waves and, on good days, short and intense barrels. Reading the line-up and controlling smaller boards are important.Foz do Lizandro (Beginners / Intermediate)
A beach break with a sandy bottom, multiple peaks, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is one of the favorite locations for surf schools and those who are learning. On smaller days, it is an excellent option for a first contact with the ocean or for families.Matadouro (Beginners / Intermediate)
Located north of the village, it combines a more accessible area for those progressing with more technical sections for intermediate levels. It is also one of the spots where many surf schools and camps are concentrated.Praia do Sul (Intermediate)
More exposed when the swell is weaker, it can be an interesting alternative for non-beginners who do not want to face the intensity of Coxos or São Lourenço.
When is the best time to surf in Ericeira?
There is surf throughout the year, but the type of wave and atmosphere varies depending on the season.
Spring (March – June)
Consistent waves, without the heaviest size of winter.
Air and water temperatures gradually rising.
Less crowded than in the middle of summer.
It is a balanced period for those who want good waves without excessive crowds.Summer (July – September)
Swell generally smaller, but sufficient for beach breaks and surf lessons.
Best time for beginners and those traveling for beach holidays.
Long days, warmer weather, and a busy village.
For intermediate and advanced levels, it may be necessary to look for specific days with more swell, or focus on more exposed reefs.Autumn (September – November)
Considered by many to be the best season:
Consistent swells, with good wave quality.
Frequently favorable wind.
Water still relatively “acceptable” in terms of temperature.
Ideal for those who want a true surf trip, with more serious waves and still some climatic comfort.Winter (December – February)
Strong and regular swell, with large entries from the north and northwest.
Heavy conditions on various reefs and point breaks.
Shorter days and colder water.
Phase suitable for experienced surfers, prepared for large and powerful waves.
