The São Lourenço Beach, on the Ericeira coast, was awarded 1st place in the “Most Accessible Beach 2025” award in the coastal beaches category, reinforcing the recognition of this beach area in the municipality of Mafra as a national example of accessibility and inclusion.

The award was presented during BTL – Lisbon Travel Market, one of the main tourism events in Portugal, and is part of the program “Accessible Beach – Beach for All!”, developed in partnership by the National Institute for Rehabilitation (INR), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), and Turismo de Portugal. The goal of this initiative is to highlight beaches that offer the best access and usability conditions for people with reduced mobility.

A national recognition for Mafra

The award was presented to the Mayor of Mafra, Hugo Moreira Luís, in a ceremony attended by several entities linked to tourism and inclusion, including the President of the Board of Directors of INR, Sónia Esperto, the President of APA, Pimenta Machado, the Vice-President of Turismo de Portugal, Teresa Monteiro, and the representative of IACESS, Helena Vitorino.

This distinction recognizes the work carried out by the municipality and local entities to ensure that the region’s beaches offer suitable conditions for all visitors, helping to make Mafra’s coastline increasingly inclusive.

In the inland beaches category, the first prize was awarded to Fraga da Pegada Beach, in Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Accessibility on Ericeira’s beaches

The “Most Accessible Beach” award distinguishes beaches that stand out for best accessibility practices among those already holding the Accessible Beach – Beach for All! label. Criteria evaluated include adapted access points, walkways on the sand, reserved parking, accessible sanitary facilities, and conditions that ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.

The distinction awarded to São Lourenço Beach demonstrates the municipality of Mafra’s commitment to continuously improving access conditions to its beaches and ensuring that the sea and shoreline can be enjoyed by all, regardless of mobility limitations.

One of the most iconic beaches in the region

Located north of Ericeira, São Lourenço Beach is known for its natural landscapes, peaceful atmosphere, and excellent conditions for surfing. The beach is part of one of the most iconic coastal areas in the region, associated with the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, attracting surfers, visitors, and residents throughout the year.

With this distinction, the importance of the beach as an accessible space prepared to welcome different audiences is further reinforced, contributing to the continued enhancement of Mafra’s coastline.
