World Surfing Reserve: what makes Ericeira unique in the world

Ericeira is not just a fishing village with blue-and-white cobbled streets. It is one of the most special destinations on the planet for those who live for the sea — a place where the waves have history, culture, and global importance.

Since 2011, Ericeira has been recognized as Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve, joining a highly exclusive group of protected coastal areas worldwide. Today, it remains one of the only European reserves, alongside North Devon, in the United Kingdom.

But what exactly makes this coast so special?
And why do surfers from all over the world choose it as a mandatory destination?

Let’s find out.

What is a World Surfing Reserve?

World Surfing Reserves distinguish coastal regions with:

  • Exceptional and consistent wave quality
  • Strong cultural and historical importance linked to surfing
  • A community committed to protecting and conserving the coastline

The program is led by the Save The Waves Coalition, and only a small number of places worldwide receive this seal. In common, they all share something rare: a surfing and natural value that is impossible to replicate.
Ericeira is one of those places.

Ericeira: Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve

The classified area stretches for about 4 km of coastline, between Praia da Empa (near São Sebastião) and São Lourenço Bay.
Here you can find something truly unique:

The 7 official surf breaks of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve

According to the Save The Waves Coalition, the reserve includes seven world-class surf breaks:

  • Pedra Branca
  • Reef
  • Ribeira d’Ilhas
  • Cave
  • Crazy Left
  • Coxos
  • São Lourenço

These waves vary in level, shape, and intensity, but they all have one thing in common: they are considered some of the best in Europe and the world within their category.

Why is Ericeira so special?

The distinction is not just due to the waves — it is a combination of factors that make it unique.

1. Diversity of waves in a very short space

In just a few kilometers, you can find waves that are:

  • long and perfect for competitions
  • tubular and fast
  • technical and challenging
  • accessible for intermediates
  • suitable for those learning

This concentration is extremely rare worldwide and makes Ericeira a “natural surf park.”

2. Year-round surfing

The coast’s geography and orientation allow Ericeira to receive constant swell throughout all seasons.
Even in the calmer months, there are always spots working.
For international surfers, this means predictability.
For investors and accommodations, it means year-round demand.

3. A community with the sea in its DNA

Surfing is part of local life:

  • recognized surf schools
  • shapers and specialized stores
  • national and international events
  • clubs and associations that protect the coastline
  • a harmonious blend of fishing culture and surf

In Ericeira, surfing is not a trend or a tourist attraction: it is culture.

4. A real commitment to coastal protection

Ericeira was also distinguished for the way it protects its coastline, with:

  • preserved cliffs
  • strict urban limits in sensitive areas
  • regular cleaning and conservation actions
  • involvement of the local community
  • educational and environmental programs

The World Surfing Reserve is a title, but also a promise of preservation.

And for non-surfers? The Reserve is for you too

Many people visit Ericeira with no intention of going into the sea — and yet they fall in love with the coast.
What you can do:

  • Walk along the coastal trail between Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos
  • Watch the surfers from the viewpoints
  • Have lunch with fresh fish overlooking the sea
  • Photograph the cliffs and the sunset
  • Explore the historic center, the streets, and the cafes
  • Relax on the calmer beaches in the village
